Community Service- A Chance to Help Others

One of the most rewarding feelings you can ever have is knowing that you’ve helped those around you. As an active community service volunteer I try to find ways to do this all the time. From cooking and serving meals at local soup kitchens, to volunteering at events for the Special Olympics and Epilepsy Society, or teaching kids at church and Pop Warner, having fun is just a bonus on top of knowing that you’ve helped someone.
Getting involved is easy. Large organizations (such as the Special Olympics) have websites listing volunteer opportunities. Often school clubs set up community service opportunities, and youth groups may have activities too. Service to others will not only benefit them, but will also benefit yourself. A well rounded person is one who is able to put aside themselves to be able to assist those around them.
Helping others can be so simple, cook a meal for someone in need, donate old stuffed animals, help someone if you see them in need. It is rewarding for everyone.

First World Problems

After Hurricane Sandy passed through yesterday, I had to get out of the house today. So I met a few friends at Froyo World. We get to the register to pay, I hand them my points card, and the girl says the system is shut down since it’s based in New Jersey. Like what the hell?! We just bought like 3 lbs of froyo and I can’t use my card. Do you know how many points that is??? Ughh, first world problems.

General Thoughts- Love

“He’s like in love with you!” Yeah, I wish. We hug, we cuddle, we’ve seen the best and worst of each other. Yet we’re still just friends. Why???? Love is too confusing.

Luck2Tuck- 10/9/2012

*This entry is dedicated to Tucker Gowen- a classmate who will forever live on in our hearts*
Luck2Tuck
Never Give Up

It’s been a tough week. Last Tuesday, my community received the news that one of my classmates- Tucker- who had been battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia for the past seven months, passed away. It was such a shock to everyone. He had put up such a strong fight, but an infection quickly compromised him. The proceeding week was filled with emotion.
Most of students found out briefly after school let out on Tuesday. During that time, I was counting homecoming ballots. Although homecoming king and queen is generally a popularity contest, we try to emphasize that the king and queen should be spirited members of the student body who work hard to represent the school. Tucker was that person. I received the news just as I was counting ballots with his name on them. Even though he had been in the hospital for seven months, he was still a member of the school, still a part of the community.
Tuesday afternoon was rough. I managed to hold myself together until I got home. Wednesday at school was even harder. The hallways were silent. Every student- even those that never had the privilege of meeting Tucker- was truly affected by the shocking news. Tears, hugs, and emotion became the norm for several days.
Ever since Tucker received his diagnosis, the community has rallied behind him. Through his battle- the ups and downs- and now, through his memory. On Wednesday the school opened up the auditorium for any student to write a message on. On Thursday, there was a Walk of Light in his memory. Over 1500 people showed up to walk around the track, and listen to speakers. The amount of support coming in from the entire community was overwhelming to everyone.

The wake on Friday and funeral on Saturday were some of the hardest times. We were all still in the mourning stage. Still trying to fathom the fact that someone could die so young. Though Tucker was not “suffering” for a large part of his battle, he was placed in ICU for the last month and truly was suffering. It was reassuring to know that he was not suffering anymore. Yet we still found it difficult to understand why he had to go through it, why he had to go.

Tucker truly was the most uplifting person many people have ever met. He had a contagious smile, vibrant personality, and heart of gold. He was a son, a brother, a classmate, an athlete, and so much more. In his obituary, his mother- who documented his, and his family’s, journey since March- wrote,

“God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around you, and whispered “Come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you slip away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.”

Tucker will forever be in our memories. The colors orange- the Leukemia awareness color- and green- Tucker’s favorite color- will forever be cherished. Luck2Tuck will always be in our hearts, on our minds, and never far from our thoughts.
Rest in Peace Tucker. 9/4/1994 - 10/9/2012

Let's Get This Off My Chest

So, umm, I kinda made out with my best friend. When people say it kind of just happened, well that’s what happened. I mean I guess I knew it was gonna happen, but then again it kinda just happened. Usually I’m the person that has to tell at least someone so I’m like itching about keeping this a secret (it was just kind of mutually decided to do so). All good now that that’s off my chest.

General Thoughts- Christmas Socks

Everyone always thinks it’s weird when I tell them that I only wear christmas socks with my Uggs. (I guess it’s a weird conversation if you’re talking about that anyways). But there’s logic behind it. I can’t wear ankle socks because they wiggle off my feet in my boots. And they really don’t make high enough socks that come in cute, normal patterns. So what I’m left with is wearing christmas socks evrytime I wear my uggs. (or, ocassionally, knee socks)

Redo- Junior Ring Dance

I want a redo. I want a night were I can actually enjoy myself. I’m going back to junior ring dance. I can’t say that my junior ring dance was terrible, or unenjoyable; but it definitely wasn’t great. So this year, I want to go again. No, it won’t be awkward-- a lot of my friends are juniors and would love for me to come. I just need to be someone’s “date” to be able to go. I have a safety date, so I’m set if I need to be. But why does this sound like such an evil plan to everyone else? I want to have fun. I want to enjoy myself and my friends. I want to dress up . Why is that so bad?

Morning Thoughts- More Sleeping Habits

How the hell am I suppose to get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep each night? Really. Number one- I’m a night owl, not a morning person; I have too much energy to go to sleep at night, and I hate getting up in the morning. Number two- I do too many things to have time to have good grades, a social life, and sleep. On average I’d say I get 6 and a half hours of sleep each night (11:30-6:00). Might sound crazy, but for me, 6:00 on a school day is a luxury. We start at 7:20 and when I took the bus it came at 6:15. To get 8-10 hours of sleep, getting up at 6 am, I’d have to go to sleep between 8:00 and 10:00. What high schooler goes to bed before 10:00??

General Thoughts- Drunk People

I hate drunk people. With a passion. Yeah, I’ll admit, some drunk people are kinda funny and whatnot. But really, take someone who’s obnoxious to start with and add alcohol; big mistake. I’m just putting this out there as a general thought; especially with high school making everyone think that getting drunk is so cool.

Conceited in a Good Way- I Handle Shit Pretty Well

I handle shit pretty well. Sometimes I question that, but then I think about how most people would handle the things that I go through, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I handle shit pretty well. I think my ability to cope is a blessing. Being able to deal with my own problems helps me when my friends need my help with their problems.
I can’t fathom how people decide to do some of the things that they do. My friends, and the people around me, do some drastic things. They cut themselves, they drink a lot, they stand on the verge of suicide. I couldn’t bear doing any of that to myself. Though sometimes I can’t wrap my mind around why they do these things, I know that I need to be there for them when they need me most.
Moral support is the most I can lend. Not only do I handle my own shit well, but I can help them through their shit pretty well too. I like to know that I can be the person that’s always there for them. Yes, I have friends that cut themselves. Yes, I’ve been in the moment where a friend is on the verge of suicide. But I’ve gotten through them. It kills me to know that I can’t change their mindset of not being good enough. If I could I’d do anything for these people that mean so much to me.
I could never imagine harming myself to cope with all the shit that I go through; and trust me, I go through a lot sometimes. But I can handle shit well, and if this helps others get through their shit too, I can only hope that I’m helping them as much as I can.
